“In March winter is holding back and spring is pulling forward. Something holds and something pulls inside of us too.”
― Jean Hersey
March arrived with the subtle shift of daylight savings time, bringing with it the promise of longer, sun-kissed days. As the soft scent of daffodils filled the air, I couldn’t help but feel the anticipation of spring’s arrival. Amidst this budding season, some inquired about my next short story, igniting a spark of excitement within me. However, my focus has shifted towards my novel, which demands my undivided attention until July 2024. Immersed in this creative endeavor, I’ve spent countless hours with my head bowed, surrounded by a sea of sticky notes, each one holding a crucial idea for my novel’s progression. Pages upon pages of reprinted changes for Chapter 1 lay scattered across my workspace, serving as a testament to the arduous journey I’ve undertaken. Although I completed the manuscript in February 2022, it has since undergone two rounds of developmental reviews, revealing areas in need of refinement. With meticulous care, I meticulously outline these sections, incorporating valuable editing suggestions and devising a comprehensive revision plan that consumed my entirety throughout the previous year. Currently, I find myself engrossed in the intricate process of unraveling each scene, a daunting task that encompasses a grand total of 137. Such is the life of an author, bound by pursuing perfection and the unwavering dedication to their craft.
Speaking of which, I recently read an informative article that delved into the life and works of the late author James Baldwin. With my earbuds on, she immersed herself in the wonderful podcast by K.M. Weiland on Backstories, hanging on every word. (Thank You my writing accountability partner) who shared that with me.
I am also reading another fiction book about an author who makes some questionable decisions. If you’re interested, check out Yellowface, by R. F. Kuang. Finished reading the follow-up book to Fourth Wing the Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarrow. For authors, engaging with the work of other writers is not only a valuable learning experience but also a source of inspiration during creative blocks.
Finally, I am engrossed in a revamped or contemporary adaptation of Shogun now on Hulu. If you remember the 1975 novel by James Clavell, it is a lengthy but worthwhile read if you are interested.
Besides my daily exercise routine, I prioritize nurturing my mental well-being. Step into my world this month, where spring whispers in nature’s ear, “Let’s celebrate!” Blossoms paint the landscape with vibrant hues, filling the air with a delicate fragrance. The gentle breeze caresses my skin, as birds chirp a symphony of joy. Welcome to this harmonious season of rejuvenation.’”
